You can buy a PEth test online for less. Many of those are medical tests, and the report says so — it's marked for medical use, not forensic. What makes a result hold up in family court is everything around the test: how the blood is collected, the chain of custody (a signed record of every person who handled your sample, from collection to the lab, so no one can claim it was mixed up or tampered with), who receives the result, and who stands behind it.

Your ID is checked, the sample is sealed and documented under chain of custody, and it goes to the lab.
